History and Evolution


The Sandur Manganese deposits were exploited even early to 1907. There are Historical events that these deposits are even worked during Tippu Sultan period. The General Sandur Mining Company (Belgium) acquire the mining right in 1907 from M/s. Joban (Jambon) and Co., Ltd., and the Manganese and Iron Ltd. Was established by his Highness late Shrimanth Yeshwanth Rao Hindurao Ghorpade in 1954. Later he converted the company as Public Ltd., in 1964. The total lease is in 47.15 hector act of which Deogiri in 1886 hector. The Manganese mines of Smiore were stared in the beginning of 20th century. General Sandur Mining Co. started regular mining in 1907. A mortgage Railway line was Establish for transportation of manganese ore had moved from required point to Deogiri.

In 1954 when the General Sandur Mining and Co. lease pried Smiore had the mining lease and since then is carrying out systematic and scientific mining, the company was besides mines. A Ferro Alloy plant in vyasankere Near Hospet producing Ferro silicon, and silicon Pig iron.

 Smiore mining lease expends over an area of 4715 SQ.KM(47.15 hectors) this is divided in two lease i.e. 1170 and 1159. Deogiri, SB Halli and Ramgad.

The mines are headed by Chief General Manager (Mines) who is assisted by three General Manager.



On 18th January 1954. Shri. Yeshwanth Rao Hinduro Ghorpade founded the Sandur Manganese and Iron Ores Private Limited (Smiore) with an authorized capital of Rs. 5 million, in order to false over and scientifically develop the mining lease over an area of 29 square miles. Granted to him by Government in 1953 and renewed in 1973 for a period of 20 years over and extend of about 18 square miles.

The Sandur Manganese and Iron Ores Private Limited, was converted into a public limited company on 29th July in 1964 to establish an Electro Metallurgical Industry, in the view of the shortage of foundry grade. Pig iron in the country and at the suggestion of Government of India, a 15MVA electric furnace was established in 1968 to produce 36,000 tons of Pig Iron per annum. This was a versatile furnace which can alternatively produce 30,000 of ferromanganese/silicon-manganese per annum.

In 1977 and 1980 two 20MVA electric furnace was installed with a total capacity of 24,000 tons of ferrosilicon per annum. Facilities have been provided to refine standard grade ferrosilicon to high purity grade (low aluminium) to meet the specific needs of users.

The company has also diversified its activities into other fields. Such as electronics, which has good growth potential both in the domestic market and for exports.
As the first step in the direction in the company has set up a joint venture Sandur Prominent Dosiertechik Gmbtt. West Germany, to manufacture Electronic Doling Pumps and flied products. In addition two more electronic projects are being implemented, namely.

  1. Computer printer collaboration with M/s. Koval Corporation. Japan
  2. Data Acquisition and Monitoring System, in collaboration with M/s. A.I. Electronics Corporation. Japan.



Manganese was discovered in the Sandur hills as early as 1838. There were mines by foreign company from 1907 to 1953. During the period The Sandur Ore developed a unique reputation of being one of the finest low grade metallurgical ores in the world from 1954. The Sandur Manganese and Iron Ores (Smiore) took over the mining operations. In 1973 the mining lease is renewed for an area about 47 sq.Kms.

The Sandur mines have rich deposit of manganese Fe in the Oxide from estimator put the total reserve of “Smiore” holding in the region of 25 million tonnes. Differing grade of manganiferrous, ferruginous, manganese and Iron Ore found in Sandur.

Smiore produce approximately 3,00,000 tonnes per annum, through open cast. Mining for internal consumption and export. This is sorted into various grade and Export.
