WELFARE AMENITIES

The Company is providing a good number of welfare schemes apart from the statutory welfare amenities to its employees which are unique for any organization. The following are the details:

A. NON STATUTORY WELFARE AMENITIES:

1. SUBSIDISED RATION SCHEME:  

a) Subsidised Ration:

Sandur

The policy of the company is to ensure that essential commodities are made available to all the employees at a stable price. A scheme to supply fixed quantities of essential commodities such as rice, jowar, toordall, jaggery, chilies and groundnut oil was introduced in 1972. Each employee is given a ration card, which entitles him to get one unit of subsidized ration consisting of the following commodities every month at 1974 prices.

Eventhough the incidence of subsidy has gone up from Rs.95.70 in Sept 1974 to Rs.1797.64. in December 2011, the company still continues to give the facility to its employees.

Free Cloth:

 Free cloth distribution scheme was introduced in 1990. When the scheme was started cloth worth Rs.400/- was being given to each employees and it is now enhanced based on category as per the table. Varieties of cloth are distributed through the SMIORE Employees’ Co-operative society.

The mines are headed by Chief General Manager (Mines) who is assisted by three General Manager.

 

2. SUBSIDIZED L.P.G.CYLINDER:

With a view to prevent cutting of trees by the employees for fuel, the management has introduced supply of L.P.G to certain category of employees on following subsidized rates, once in 45 days:

3. SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEM:

The Company has provided the Solar Hot water systems in Deogiri and SB Halli camps to their employees who stay at both camps area. Twelve and Thirty five Solar Hot Water Systems have been fixed in different areas of Deogiri & SB Halli camps and each system contains 1200 and 750 liters capacity of water tank respectively and every house will be getting 100 liters of Hot water per day.

 

4. DEPARTMENTAL STORES:

Essential items like grocery, detergents, cosmetics, stationery and other house hold commodities are supplied through the Departmental Store run by SMIORE Employees Co-operative Society with no profit no loss basis.

 

5. RECREATION CLUB/LIBRARY CUM READING ROOM:

Recreation clubs at Deogiri and S.B.Halli camps are provided with color T.V, reading Room with leading news papers / periodicals in English/Kannada/Telugu languages, indoor games like Chess, Carom, Shuttle, Table Tennis etc, outdoor games like Cricket, Volley Ball, Badminton, Tennis and Baseball are also encouraged.

 

6. TAILORING CENTRES:

Two tailoring centers are established, one each at Deogiri and S.B.Halli with qualified and experienced Lady Tailoring Instructors. The centers cater to the female dependents of employees. The training is given free of charge. The programme was started in the year 1981. Up to 1990 the training was imparted without any certificate. From 1990 onwards the trainees started appearing for the examination conducted by the Board of Technical Education, Govt. of Karnataka. Till date, a total of 1260 ladies have been given training. From 1990-91 a total of 209 ladies appeared for the examination out of which 117 ladies passed and were issued certificates. The idea of training these women is to generate additional income to their families.

 

7. TRANSPORT FACILITIES:

The Company has provided conveyance to the employees’, children who are studying in Schools/Colleges at Sandur / Yeshwanthnagar. Conveyance is provided to the staff / workers who travel from Sandur to Deogiri and vice versa.

 

8. GIFTS AND OTHER ALLOWANCES:

a. Marriage Gift: The Company is sanctioning Marriage Gifts to the employee during the marriage of self and their children limiting to two marriages. This scheme works based on category. Details are as mentioned below: - (eligibility minimum of 10 years service including probationary period)

10. MEDICAL REIMBURSEMENT:

Apart from the free medical checkups and treatments from the Company's Hospital /Dispensaries, the management sanctions the medical reimbursement of 20% of the Basic + DA per annum to meet out the medical expenses at out station hospitals to the employees as per the scheme.

 

11. INTEREST FREE MEDICAL LOAN (10 MONTHS SALARY) FOR SURGERIES / SPECIAL TREATMENT:

The company extends this medical facility for surgery / special treatment of employees after they exhaust their medical reimbursement eligibility for the current year. The employees are eligible for an interest free loan equivalent 10 month’s salary (Basic + DA). The same will be recovered in 36 easy monthly installments.

 

11. INTEREST FREE MEDICAL LOAN (10 MONTHS SALARY) FOR SURGERIES / SPECIAL TREATMENT:

The company extends this medical facility for surgery / special treatment of employees after they exhaust their medical reimbursement eligibility for the current year. The employees are eligible for an interest free loan equivalent 10 month’s salary (Basic + DA). The same will be recovered in 36 easy monthly installments.

 

12. PROLONGED SICKNESS BENEFIT:

It is an another unique scheme of the company commenced in 1976 in which whenever an employee is suffering from any prolonged sickness, he is eligible for this benefit. The entire cost of medical expenses are reimbursed. During prolonged sickness upto 180 days the employee gets 50% of his / her wages/ subsidized ration.

 

13. COMPANY'S PENSION SCHEME:

SMIORE has introduced the company's Pension scheme with effect from 1.1.92, wherein every employee on completion of a minimum of 20 years of service in the company is eligible for company's pension apart from EPS 1995. In case of death or medically unfit of an employee, the minimum service for pension is 10 years.

 

14. EXECUTIVE SUPERANNUATION SCHEME:

The Company's Executive Superannuation Scheme is applicable to Managers and above categories of employees, wherein 15% of their basic salary is contributed to LIC and accrued into Employees Superannuation Fund. At the time of retiring/leaving the organization, the facility as opted by the official will be extended to the employee.

 

15. INTEREST ON HOUSING LOAN SCHEME

To encourage the employees to own their houses the Company bears the interest on the loan taken by an employee for construction /purchase of house from recognized financial institutions/nationalized banks. The employees are provided housing loans up-to 60 times of their basic plus D.A. The employee has to pay 1% to 4% of the interest and remaining interest will be borne the company (pays the difference).

 

16. EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

a) Balawadies:

The company runs three Balawadies at Deogiri and SB Halli. The details are as follows (for the year 2010-2011)

The children are supplied with nutritional diet like energy food, buns and milk everyday. The medical examination and care of the children are taken by our medical officers.

b) Primary School:

Two Higher Primary Schools are run by the Management - one at Deogiri and another at SB.Halli. Free education is given to all children studying in the school.

c) High School:

One high school at Deogiri is run by the Sandur Education Society. The total strength of students studying in high school is 248. The performance of the students in public examinations every year is fairly satisfactory.

c) Commerce Institute:

A Commerce Institute was opened in 1992 at Deogiri to impart training in Typing and Shorthand to the employees' children. During the last 17 years a total of 220 students have passed in the examinations conducted by the State Secondary Education Board. The average result works out to 70% securing 2 ranks in the state level. Computer education was introduced in the Institute during this year.

 

17. COMPANY'S SCHOLARSHIP:

The company sanctions scholarships to the meritorious children of its employees to encourage and pursue their education. The employees’ children who score 50% and above are eligible for scholarship. a) Company Scholarship to those who are studying in SANDUR RESIDENTIAL COMPOSITE JUNIOR COLLEGE:

The employees’ children are selected by way of competitive examination (written and oral) to study in the Sandur Residential Schools and they are eligible for exemption in tuition fees as given below:

1) Children of supervisory and below categories 60% of annual fees (Tuition and Hostel Fees).

2) Children of officers and above categories 40 % annual fees (Tuition and Hostel Fees) .

b) The Company has instituted “Golden Jubilee Scholarship” on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee year to the employees’ children to be awarded on merit-cum-means basis.

c) Educational Advance: Recoverable interest free advance of Rs.1000/- each every year is given to the employees of supervisory and below categories to enable them to meet the educational expenditure on their children. Interest free loan of Rs.10, 000/- per year is given for professional courses which will be recovered in 12 monthly installments.

 

18. SAFETY ITEMS:

a) Uniforms:

Terry-cot 3 pairs of uniforms in 2 years are issued to certain categories of employees like drivers, cleaners, drillers, security guards etc.

a) Raincoats:

Raincoats are issued to certain categories of employees especially to those who work in the field.

 

19. HOUSING:

a) Housing:

As high as 805 (Deogiri-506, SBH-299) Quarters (having amenities such as free Electricity, Water / hot water, effective Drainage system, including cable Television network) are provided to employees who reside in Deogiri / SB Halli camps. The remaining workmen come from nearby villages to whom HRA is being paid.

b) Electricity:

Free electricity is provided to all the persons living in our colonies. In the event of failure of KPTCL (power), diesel generator power is provided for essential services like, hospitals, canteens, offices, schools, water pumps and street lights.

 

20. EX-GRATIA FOR FUNERAL EXPENSES:

When an employee dies while on service, the Management sanctions Rs.5000/- to the legal heir to meet the funeral expenses of the employee.

21. AROGYA:

The "AROGYA HEALTH CENTRE" run by the company at Sandur is a full-fledged health unit managed by the experienced doctors of whom one is a Optholmic surgeon. The unit is equipped with two mobile ambulance vans with latest medical/surgical instruments and catering to the medical needs of the residents of Sandur and nearby villages irrespective of whether they are the company's employees or not. Monthly Optholmic free surgical camps are being organized at Arogya, Sandur for eye checkup/surgeries. The patients are provided with spectacles free of cost, besides providing free food during their stay.

22. ADARSHA:

Sandur was lacking a community hall. Keeping this in view, "Adarsha Community Hall" was constructed in 1991. This community hall is used for various social and other functions. This hall is well equipped with modern amenities on a normal rent.

2. SAFETY ITEMS:

a) Shoes:

Leather shoes are issued to all employees apart from Mining Staff once in a year.

b) Medical Examination:

As per the Rule 29 (B) of Mines Rules, 1955, Initial and periodical medical examination of mining personnel are undertaken by the Management for detection and prevention of diseases connected with mining activity.

3. EXGRATIA FOR FAMILY PLANNING:

To encourage small families, the employees/their spouses are motivated to undergo sterilization operations after having one or two children. Regular Family Planning camps are being conducted in Deogiri Hospital. This facility is extended to all the surrounding villagers who desire to undergo family planning operation. The employee/spouse who undergo sterilization operation is being sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs.1000/- in addition to 7 days special leave.

4. MEDICAL FACILITIES:

Three hospitals and one dispensary managed by the qualified doctors and medical staff are functioning at Deogiri, at S.B.Halli, at Sandur and at Yeshwanthnagar

5. PROVIDENT FUND SCHEME:

The Employees Provident Fund Scheme is in existence (with 12% of wages/salary contribution by the employees and equal share by the employer).

6. EMPLOYEES PENSION SCHEME:

All the employees are covered under the Employees Pension Scheme (EPS). Out of 12% PF contribution being made by the employer, 8.33% is remitted towards the Employees Pension Scheme (EPS’95).

7. BONUS:

Company pays bonus to the employees as per the Bonus Act-1965.

8. INSURANCE SCHEME:

The employees are insured under Employees Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme, covered by MetLife India Insurance Company Limited.

9. GRATUITY:

The employees are paid Gratuity as per the Payment of Gratuity Act. In addition, the Company has entered into an agreement with MetLife and taken a scheme whereby the legal heir of the diseased employee will get the future service gratuity.

10. MATERNITY BENEFIT:

Maternity benefit is provided as per Maternity Benefit Act 1965.

11. APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING:

Under the Apprenticeship Act-1961 the company is providing apprenticeship training. There are 20 apprentices presently undergoing training in different trades.
